Whale Sharks? What is a Whale Shark? Whale sharks are one of the largest fish in the Ocean and migrate to Isla Holbox once per year. During the months of July and August, visitors can snorkel with these extremely docile and fascinating ocean creatures in the Gulf of Mexico. Oops, we forgot about the Manta Rays, Dolphins and Tropical Birds. This will be one of the coolest things you have ever done!

Infamous Abyss Dive Center Guided Tours
Let one of our experienced guides from the Dive Centers take you to the place where the whale sharks hang out during the summer months. If you don't know how to snorkel, our guides will assist with instruction.

The Whalesharks are Officially Here!

Watch for the 2010 Season June 1- Aug 31

The whale shark is the biggest fish on earth. It can grow up to 15m/50ft! In summer, plankton blooms on the north-eastern tip of the Yucatan peninsula where the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean merge. Near the islands of Holbox and Contoy, the plankton attracts an incomparable amount of this giant species, with over 40 spotted at one time!

While whale sharks feed, moving gently on the ocean’s surface, you can safely snorkel with them or watch them from the boat. Specially trained and experienced guides are on hand to brief you about applicable regulations and procedures in order to ensure these peaceful animals are not harmed.
